christmas eve

“The loneliness of the night concealed the grief
of the loneliness of a man on this Christmas Eve.

He thought he could hear carols being sung;
But when he looked up, he could felt his heart sunk.
Self delusion has again mocked his sanity,
as there is on one within hundred yards vicinity.”

ski 1

We embarked on our 9hr bus journey at 12 midnight. The unrelenting chilliness of dark night coupled with the gruelingly long bus ride did little to dampen our spirits. When we arrived at the Belle Plagne, it was a breathtaking moment. The snow capped mountains with a clear blue sky as a backdrop, the pristine white landscapes dotted with skiers gliding down them and the sunrise over the mountain ridge. We were totally mesmerized. We held our breath as we took in each picturesque view in awe; hoping to etch them permanently in our minds. The high altitude made us cut short our breathtaking experience as we took in deep breaths to acclimatise to the lower air density.

"They bundled all fifty of us into two unmarked minibus in the dead of the night. Temperature has dropped to below zero. The cold made the night seems darker than it usually is. Nothing stirred, the silent whispers were immediately hushed. A small backpack was all we were allowed to bring along with us. Cold and tired, we boarded the bus obediently; the bus is expected to arrive at its destination before dawn the next day. We were unsure of what to expect. The anticipation kept us awake thoughout the journey, as we huddled closer to each other for warmth and comfort. We prepare ourselves for whatever awaits us.."

motivation

I want to show people who disappoint me that I'm going to lead a better life than them. So I work myself harder to show them that they were wrong about me. If I eventually succeed, I would be filled with a sense of pride and satisfaction which I'm not sure whether is derived from the fruits of the labour or from the fact tt I have proven a point. I wonder if this is actually a healthy source of motivation or a self destructive vengeful mentality. I need a moral beacon.

Calvin and Hobbes (2)

Well , if I am ever a tiger, I would probably turn out looking something like this. lanky and a little fuzzy. But I dun think that I would mind a bit.
"How I wish I have a tiger like Hobbes... Mayb I could be someone else's tiger. =) "

aa, those are verbatim of your words, right? Granted, I think that you do have Hobbes' patient dignity and his common sense. Good-natured, intelligent, friendly, and enthusiastic in a sneaking-up-and-pouncing sort of way. You do fit into that profile you know. Good thing you have me here to show you the consequences of your words. aa, have you ever wonder how you will look like if you are a tiger?

calvin and hobbes(1)

I'm a great fan of this comic strips. So when u draw parallel between me and Calvin, I didn't take that as a compliment. So in good humor, I feel that I have to live up to his name. After all, ...

Calvin
Calvin is named for a sixteenth-century theologian who believed in predestination. Most people assume that Calvin is based on a son of mine, or based on detailed memories of my own childhood. In fact, I don't have children, and I was a fairly quiet, obedient kid -- almost Calvin's opposite. One of the reasons that Calvin's character is fun to write is that I often don't agree with him. . . .

Many of Calvin's struggles are metaphors for my own. I suspect that most of us get old without growing up, and that inside every adult (sometimes not very far inside) is a bratty kid who wants everything his own way. I use Calvin as an outlet for my immaturity, as a way to keep myself curious about the natural world, as a way to ridicule my own obsessions, and as a way to comment on human nature. I wouldn't want Calvin in my house, but on paper, he helps me sort through my life and understand it.

Hobbes
Named after a seventeenth-century philosopher with a dim view of human nature, Hobbes has the patient dignity and common sense of most animals I've met. Hobbes was very much inspired by one of our cats, a gray tabby named Sprite. Sprite not only provided the long body and facial characteristics for Hobbes, she also was the model for his personality. She was good-natured, intelligent, friendly, and enthusiastic in a sneaking-up-and-pouncing sort of way. Sprite suggested the idea of Hobbes greeting Calvin at the door in midair at high velocity.

The so-called "gimmick" of my strip -- the two versions of Hobbes -- is sometimes misunderstood. I don't think of Hobbes as a doll that miraculously comes to life when Calvin's around. Neither do I think of Hobbes as the product of Calvin's imagination. . . . Calvin sees Hobbes one way, and everyone else sees Hobbes another way. I show two versions of reality, and each makes complete sense to the participant who sees it. I think that's how life works. None of us sees the world exactly the same way, and I just draw that literally in the strip.

Calvin's Parents
I've never given Calvin's parents names, because as far as the strip is concerned, they are important only as Calvin's mom and dad. Calvin's dad has been rumored to be a self-portrait. All my characters are half me, so it's true in some ways, but Calvin's dad is also partly a satire of my own father. Any strip about how suffering "builds character" is usually a verbatim transcript of my dad's explanations for why we were all freezing, exhausted, hungry and lost on camping trips. These things are a lot funnier after 25 years have passed.

Calvin's mom is the daily disciplinarian, a job that taxes her sanity, so I don't think we get to see her at her best. I regret that the strip mostly shows her impatient side, but I try to hint at other aspects of her personality and her interests by what she's doing when Calvin barges in. . . .

. . . As secondary characters, I've tried to keep Calvin's parents realistic, with a reasonable sense of humor about having a kid like Calvin. I think they do a better job than I would.

Susie Derkins
Susie is earnest, serious and smart. . . . I suspect that Calvin has a mild crush on her that he expresses by trying to annoy her, but Susie is a bit unnerved and put off by Calvin's weirdness. This encourages Calvin to be even weirder, so it's a good dynamic. Neither of them quite understands what's going on, which is probably true of most relationships.

Miss Wormwood
As a few readers guessed, Miss Wormwood is named after the apprentice devil in C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters." I have a lot of sympathy for Miss Wormwood. We see hints that she's waiting to retire, that she smokes too much, and that she takes a lot of medication. I think she seriously believes in the value of education, so needless to say, she's an unhappy person.

Rosalyn
Probably the only person Calvin fears is his baby-sitter. I put her in a Sunday strip early on, never thinking of her as a regular character, but her intimidation of Calvin surprised me, so she's made a few appearances since. Rosalyn even seems to daunt Calvin's parents, using their desperation to get out of the house to demand advances and raises. Rosalyn's relationship with Calvin is pretty one-dimensional, so baby-sitter stories get harder and harder to write, but for a later addition to the strip, she's worked pretty well.

Moe
Moe is every jerk I've ever known. He's big, dumb, ugly and cruel. I remember school being full of idiots like Moe. I think they spawn on damp locker room floors.

aa, this is a prelude to what is about to come. watch for the next post...

smile. I spend the whole day living the dreams of many people. Spent a day in Paris, dropped by souvenirs shops, basked in the Christmas spirits, caught a movie, enjoyed the majestic night view of Notre Dame de Paris and took a walk along the romantic river La Seine. I didn't smile much throughout, instead I spend most of the time feeling uninterested. Something is missing. Me. I'm lost.

rhetoric

I can't say that I'm in a state of utter despondency but it has been a while since I felt really happy. I won't blame the company that I'm keeping, cos really they are a good bunch. Neither would I blame myself, cos I know I'm far from being an antisocial nut case. Nonetheless, I would really appreciate that people do not try to impose their values on me. Being constantly bombarded with heavily nuanced questions that question my lifestyle, I have a feeling that I would soon stand on the side of anti establishment. Why do you sleep at 11pm and wake up at 6am? Why do you work so hard? I believe that all if you would have easily found the answers to the above two questions. Even though I have an answer to these questions too, I would usually choose not to reply them. Rhetorical questions, I feel, are not meant to be answered. It makes me wonder why do people not do things that are good for them? However, I usually stop short of trying to rationalize with them, as more often than not, things will turn awkward. I figured it would be wiser to not spoil the mood then. Thus, I would just forced out a smile, one that is already near perfection due to constant practice, and a pacifying nod of acknowledgment.

One of the most classic of such questions came when I was packing my groceries into the plastics bags at a supermarket counter one day. I advised my friend to pack more stuffs into each plastic bags as he was indiscriminately pulling out the plastic bags from its holder. Then, came the rhetoric ,"You are not even paying for it. Why save?"

A rhetorical question can always be responded with another rhetorical question. Tired and hungry, I decided to let that statement pass. but...

why waste?

the finishing line

Some of you have probably read this. this goes out to my friends who are running the race this sunday, I really wished that I could be there running along side you. All the best !

"Morning!" said the stranger.
I turned my head
half filled with anger,
only to see my sweet darling angel.

"Wake up darling its 6am.."
she bleated like an endearing lamb.
"but angel its 6km.."
I protested like an unyielding ram.

Held and protected by the comfort of my bed,
I found more reasons to silence the voice in my head.
Looking out of my window to further confirmation,
I saw in the dark sky- the zodiac constellations.

“Nothing’s working.
In such an early morning.
My body’s unwilling.
My mind’s not encouraging”

She held in her hands a pair of socks,
Dangling it in front of me as she mocked,
"Walk the walk,
And not just talk the talk."

Casting her words aside,
the bouts of sleepiness came in tides.
I drifted back into the land of dreams,
Where everything’s peaceful, so it seems.

In Wonderland, whilst talking to Alice,
I heard a voice filled with mirthful malice.
Immediately, I sense a great danger,
As turned to face my anger-ridden angel.

“Get out of bed,
Or I’ll have you roasted
Like burnt bread,
I’ll make sure you are fully toasted”

The threat struck me where it hurts the most,
“NO, I do not want to be a bread toast!”
I jumped out of bed full of fear,
And quickly changed into my running gear.

"Morning again! Its only 6km…"
Once again, she bleated like an endearing lamb….

junyong

"2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 "
"3, 2, 3, 4, 5 , 6,7, 8"

The voice of the aerobics instructor could be heard even before I peeked through the gymnasium's glass door. Inside, I could see lean and toned bodies moving to the beats of Britney Spears. The morning's engineering lessons just ended, barely 15min into lunch time, and these people are already sweating it out. The hour long aerobic session seems to be a good idea for girls who want to burn some calories and skip lunch at the same time. Mesmerized by their gracefulness and nimble movements, I continued to stand and stare outside the door.

I forgot how long I had stood there staring as time flew by. The music stopped abruptly, and the place was filled with silence. The instructor looked straight at me, a subtle cue for the whole class to divert their attention towards me. I gave an embarrassed smile and waited for them to respond.

The seeds of discords were sowed. Nourished by the constant flow of bad blood, malicious vibes begin to sprout everywhere. One should learn how to keep his mouth shut when one is angry. Blatant display of anger is not a sign of strength; it is a last ditch attempt when reasoning fails. I am forced to notice the flaws in characters as I watch the drama unfolds.

He walked out of the examination hall feeling disorientated and mentally wasted by the 3 hour paper. Ignoring all the ruckus created by the post exam conversations happening all around him, he had decided to leave the exam post-mortem till another day. There is only so much mental stress he can cope with in a day.

Tired but not disheartened, he decided to collect his mails, have a quick lunch and return to him room to pay back the interest accumulated by the sleep debt. For every 1hour of sleep missed, one has to make it up with three. Damn the body works like a loan shark with a 200% interest when it comes to sleeping hours. Lost in his own thoughts, his eyes caught a glimpse of something that interests him…

It was a surprise! He hesitated opening the box for a moment as a fleeting thought of mail bombs crossed his mind when he saw that the sender's name was Aaxxxxa Txn (the name had been crossed out to protect her idenitity). He opened the box and he liked what he saw inside - love.

singlish

Do you know that "shiok!" is originally "shauk" in Punjabi? Do you know that Singlish, like Chinese and Japanese, is topic-prominent? Do you know that Singlish is an English-based creole language native to Singapore? Do you know that it is the first language of many younger Singaporeans, especially those whose parents do not share a native language or dialect, and that is the second language of nearly all the rest of the country's residents?

I bet you didn't know, but neither did I. According to the 'gahmen' my first language has always been English, but Wikipedia suggests otherwise. Before we delve deeper and learn the grammer and phonetics of Singlish. I suggest that we first find our what genre of Singlish do you speak. Ae you more likely to say : -

1) "Dis guy Singrish si beh powderful wan. Hoh seh liao lah! Damn steady wan la!"
2) "Dis guy Singlish damn powerful one leh."
3) "This person's Singlish is very good."

Well, for those who choose 1, you speak Basilect Singlish. If you have choosen 2 or 3 then you are speaking Mesolect and Acrolect Singlish respectively. If you want to learn more or brush up on your Singlish, you can pick up the finer points of the language (like past tense, negation and interrogative) through this Wikipedia's website - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish. For any unfamiliar vocabulary, you can check out the Wikipedia's online Singlish dictionary - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singlish_vocabulary. Start now and Speak Singlish as it is unbroken today!

Today, my friend came and asked how to write 'old' in chinese, cos he is having a chinese exam later in the evening. Grinning, I effortlessly accomplished the tasked with a few quick stroke of my pen. I was filled with a small sense of achievement like it had meant something. I was promptly put in place by zhang chi who gamely showed me how to write biáng which you would see in the next post is actually not that difficult but a mere 57 strokes...

so u studied in a SAP school? so u got A1 for Higher Chinese? so your mother is a chinese teacher? but do you think that your chinese is good? are you game enough to take up the cj's chinese challenge? For the love of chinese, go grab your papers and pens! WARNING: DO NOT SCROLL PAST CHALLENGE 4!!

plateau

At some point of time in life, people would lose sight of their goals in life. It is at this point when they pause to look around trying to look for new directions, to ask for advices or to take a break. I had stood still for 4months already. Everything had come to a halt. I wondered ," had i deliberately opted for a directional change or had i gotten lost along my way." Either way, I had not been able to move on as fast as i used to as I am not sure if i had headed in the right direction. Having no motivations, pent-up frustration, a diminishing of social circle and a draining routine. The lack of meaningful soul searching conversations and silent comfortable companionship, I'm afraid I'm losing touch my human side. Is this the price of my pursuit? I tread with trepidation, hopefully without ever losing my optimism.

I missed those conversations we had over long dinners.

run

The airline's having a strike. Bus/train services still recovering from theirs. I was left waiting for a train that never came. As a result, I missed the last 9pm bus. I was stranded at the train station situated at the base of the plateau at 1015pm. The solution - a dark 45min climb up the plateau cutting through a small forest to get back to my school. Sick, cold, hungry, angry and tired, I contemplated sleeping at the station with the rats; and dropping the stupid idea immediately. Since public tansport failed me, I decide to rely on the my most dependable pair of legs which had succumbed to cold and my equally dependable pair of lungs which had succumbed to sickness.

I ran my most punishing 30 min run. oh please god spare me from a deja vu..

experimental music

The music teacher wanted us to do a presentation on anything related to experimental music. Since this is suppose to be a fun class, so he asked us to be as creative as possible and make use of whatever we have learnt as engineers to help us come up with ideas. The next lesson, this classmate of mine took out his guitar and started playing a very nice piece of music which he composed. At the end of the performance, the prof asked him,"So how is this music experimental?" He replied,"Fibonacci series." He has used the Fibonacci series to come up with the pitch for the scores!! Wow talk about inspiration! Who says scientist dun have an artistic side? Then my prof upped the creativity level when he told us about this musician John Cage who composed his music by imagining a score sheet in the sky by drawing 5 horizontal lines across the night sky and filled in the score sheet by superimposing the stars!! Though not stellar, the music turns out not too bad. Maybe you budding musicians (or scientists) out there can try something like that.

Meanwhile, i have yet to figure something out for myself..

sensitivity

A friend sent me a youtube clip featuring an old trishaw rider giving a lift to three young foreigners who made a ridicule of the old man's cycling speed and eventually refused to pay him his due. Bearing in mind that a trishaw is not built for speed and is definitely not meant to carry 3 passengers. On top of that the man is already in his 60s. These young people have no sensitivity at all. Least they could do is to have some respect for a fellow human being. It pains me to see old people having to go through this just to make a living. They shouldn't have to work so hard at this age.

dancing queen

From Herald Sun : THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?
If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa. Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses logic, detail oriented facts, rule, words and language, present and past, math and science, can comprehend, knowing acknowledges order/pattern perception, knows object name, reality based, forms, strategies, practical, safe.

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS uses feeling ,"big picture" oriented, imagination rules, symbols and images, present and future, philosophy & religion, can "get it" (i.e. meaning), believes appreciates spatial perception, knows object function, fantasy based, presents possibilities, impetuous, risk taking.

I can switch ftom left, to right and back to the left. cool.

sun is a constant

He sat motionlessly on the faithful bench which had accompanied him for most of his retirement years contemplating. Watching the sun rise on the eastern horizon, his eyes scanned swiftly the welkin around the sun’s locality. In a moment, his face ceased and a smile broke across it. He had spotted Venus the ‘morning star’ at its usual position forty-five degree left of the sun. He congratulated himself, musing at his small astronomical feat.

The beauty of the sun rise was going to be short-lived as he watched the ominous clouds gathered rapidly in a distance. Even the brilliant sun, illuminating and ruling his vast universe from faraway, would have to give way to the local menace. He grimaced as he was reminded of how his nephew ruthlessly wrenched away the control of this multi-national company from his feeble hands. That cad had stolen from him his comfortable lifestyle like how the clouds were going to obscure the beautiful sunrise. Helplessly, He watched the grey clouds slowly swallowing up the sun; squeezing the last beam if light to anonymity. He sighed as if he felt his own light being extinguished.

He shifted his attention to the lambs who shared the same greenery as him. They were accustomed to his daily presence since he shifted to the countryside months ago. He looked at his silent companions; frolicking around freely without a care in the world. Poor creatures, he thought, to be not blessed with a superior brain. He continued to observe them for another few minutes and he felt himself wondering. Whilst he pitied their lack of intellectual inability, he pondered.
What do they think of me? Probably to them, I just an odd looking lost sheep out-cast by the rest of the normal sheep.

He felt the soft beating of raindrops on his thick woolen clothes. Time to move into shelter. He got on his feet, straightened his back and painfully fought the rheumatism which had plagued him for years as he made his way to the safety of shelter. He made himself comfortable and positioned himself to face the lambs only to find them dispersing.
Probably, they had sensed the change in weather too.

For an hour, he sat listening to the soft drumming of the raindrops against the roofs. Occasionally, one or two would escape through the umbrella-like protection and land on his feet. Eventually, the sun still prevails cos it is the only thing constant in this universe.

He thought as he sat through the rain and the first ray of sunlight peeked through from behind the veil of thinning clouds. He flipped opened the papers and on the bottom right hand corner: "Weather Forecast for N0vember: Thunderstorm expected from 9th to 19th November." He sighed again. It will pass..

p.s. Supélec exams period: 9th -19th Nov. coincidence.

rights

Today, when I boarded the bus back from a routine grocery trip to Carrefour, the bus driver kindly reminded me that there would not be any bus services tomorrow. It took a while before the news sink in, but it was no surprise. Tomorrow is the 19th of Oct; the day when the workers in the transport industry would be be going on strike. The transport network would cease tomorrow and the county's heart would skip a beat. Strikes in France are no secrets. It was published in the papers a month ago so that people have ample time to make arrangements to carpool and as such... perhaps also for the government to have sufficient time to draft out a compromising agreement.

Trying fruitlessly to draw parallel from my personal experience, I couldn't help but notice that such a well-coordinated nationwide strike is not plausible in my country. We really a country of harmlessly obedient people. So much so that we would only complain to one another, accept any policies and then wimp in a corner. I always believed that governments should listen to their people. Let's hope this is just a mild stroke and not a heart attack; and life would return to normalcy the day sfter. Thankfully, I'm sure that this won't be another Myanmar.

From the myopic student point of view, classes might be cancelled tomorrow if some of the professors got held back! yay!

I would always be behind the bus uncle. figuratively & literally.

wow

Yesterday, my Cooking skills levelled up again. I am no longer a mere Level 1 Kitchen Helper, but am a Level 2 Junior Cook now. It's time to upgrade my inventory with better knives, pots and pans. After which I would be able to slice the Cult of Cunning Carrots into shreds with my Blades of Culinary and burn Mr. Malicious Meat with my Fire Stove of Fury. Anyone has got any good Spells Recipe to recommend, as I would need better spells books to be able to cook up Smoke Storms and whip up dishes with Aromatic Aura.

Welcome to WoW - World of WarringCooks.

narcissism

Someone once asked me how did i managed to make narcissism looks like an art? What are the pre-requisite qualities? We turned to face each other. I was looking at a boy seeking wisdom, and he was looking at an epitome of class and confidence.

The art of Narcissism

I said, "Watch and learn."

second chance

I am still a little shaken from the moment I saw my friend's name on the news a few days back. I couldn't really relate the things reported in the news to the person whom I chatted frequently with on msn. I secretly hoped that the same name reported isn't referring to the same person I have known. The remembrance is uncanny. Hope everything would turn out fine for him. People deserve a second chance. He made a mistake, but he is still going to be my friend.

bless you, my friend.

stupidity

Steep learning curve in nus has always been a challenge. Regadless of whether the small brains of ours are capable of absorbing everything, information and knowledge will still be feed to the students at an exponential rate. Here they straightened out the learning curve into a vertical straight line. I am still standing on the x-axis, looking upwards hoping to see the end and wondering how to even mount the learning 'curve'.

I feel so stupid.

funny bones

"And do you know I joined Body Sculpting and Yogilatez? I regretted joining Yogilatez cause its so torturous on my oddly shaped bones. I can't do what the teacher and others can do, but I can do what others can't, and tt is not many things. "

This really tickes my funny bones. Thanks. You made my day.

Its Friday already! The week flew by even before i could blink an eye, there's not enough time even for me to catch a breath. Cool! The universal remote control must have worked. You guys want one too? The name is rather long, but try to remember.

dear S

"Dear S,

I woke up cold one misty morning,
realizing too late that you had left without warning.
I should have seen the ominous signs coming,
now im sorry for my late dawning.

We got acquainted on my first day in this big city,
you were always there with unfailing regularity.
Time paused for us and felt like endless eternity.
Soon I was won over by your sunshine personality.

Have you forgotten the things you told,
“I would still be here when you are old;
embracing you with my loving warm hold
and protecting you from the banal human cold.”

Now you left with me with just a note,
That says you are leaving for some place remote.
Right now your presence is what I needed.
I really shouldn’t have taken you for granted.

I missed you and your radiant smiles,
That can warm hearts from thousands of miles.
To wake up again to the warmth of your touch
That’s all I’m asking, is it too much?

I missed u, Summer. "

autumn in here

"In autumn when the trees are brown
The little leaves come tumbling down
They do not make the slightest sound
But lie so quietly on the ground
Until the wind comes puffing by
And blows them off towards the sky.

The winds will blow their own freshness into you,
and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop away from you
like the leaves of Autumn. "

Fall poem by John Muir

electives

My 4 electives for this term:-
1) AstroPhysics.
2) Discovering and Experimenting with Music.
3) Spanish
4) Tennis

A round rounded education gives you a healthy dose of rocket science, cultural arts, language and sports. So are you being fed the right dosage in NUS?

detached

Everyday passed with such an uncompromising routine. I can feel my senses becoming dull and numbed. The lack of mental activities these days makes me wonder if the head sitting between my shoulders is still functioning. This statement is oxymoron. Obviously, I would need a head to be able to wonder in the first place. However, the physical presence of a head does little to assure me of if the synapses inside are still well connected. I can picture myself standing in the middle of a street as the rest of the wold fastforward around me - just like in the movies. I need a break in the routine.

I'm going versailles next sunday.

a moment

"so often i keep myself focus on the road ahead that it is only after i arrive at the end of the road when i realised that i had missed out on most of the beautiful sceneries and the beautiful people along my way. sadly, i cannot turn back time to revisit those things that i have missed; but i can slow down my pace to enjoy my road ahead."

photos

Some of my better shots. Constuctive comments are welcomed. I realised I need to be more ceative in coming up with titles for my photos. But my brain so bogged down Java and Logics that I can only come up with cheesy titles. I decided against cheesy titles so i settled for simple titles. Nothing can goes wrong with Simplicity. I guess i will leave the title brainstorming till next time unless anyone of you want to suggest anything.
